Years ago, when I was still a “blushing” Medium & Intuitive I had this very delicate and professional way of explaining to people what my choice of occupation was. From nurses at my various doctors’ offices, to acquaintances of my friends…well heck…even my in-laws; it was always an interesting topic of conversation.
The conversations always started out very simple; a cordial “nice to meet you” which flowed into the dreaded question of “so, Kelly, what do you do for a living?” And of course, there was always quite a range of reactions to my unusual career.
And while I completely realize that what I do for a living is not necessarily something that you see teachers bringing into a high school on career day – I adore the gifts I’ve been blessed with and love going to work every day. It’s funny, because I really dislike using the word “work” – because my work, really isn’t that at all. It’s something that just flows in, out, around, and through me. It’s something that I can’t ever really turn off, but instead just use an “energetic dimmer switch” (of sorts) to “turn down.” It’s really just something that had merged into me, helping to create the person who I truly feel that I am.
Reflecting back, I think that I dreaded telling people about my career choice, mostly because of those preconceived notions that people tend to have about Mediums, Psychics (or Intuitives), Healers, etc. My goal was to never put myself in a position where I would either make someone else uncomfortable because of my career choice, or to put myself in a position where I would be ridiculed because of that choice. I pride myself on being respectful of other people’s belief systems, and of course always hope for the same in return.
Anyhow – I wanted to take the opportunity to answer a few questions that people always ask me. Your questions have helped me to stand up a little taller when I talk about my beloved career, and to help that once “blushing” Medium and Intuitive to feel proud about the gifts that God has blessed her with.
1. Kelly…What is a Medium?
Well, Mediums are individuals who have been given a gift that allows them to communicate with people who have passed away. A Medium will give messages from those in spirit, and the main objective of a Medium’s work is to prove that when we pass away, we truly don’t die…communication can still happen!
Some Mediums are “Physical Mediums” (this is what I am). Physical Mediums can see and hear Spirits the same way that they would be looking and listening to living humans. Other Mediums are “Mental Mediums” (I can do this as well), which only see and hear in their “mind’s eye.” While Mediums typically tackle all sorts of topics, they specialize in speaking to the deceased. It’s important to know that all Mediums are also Psychic and can work intuitively (see the next question to see what a Psychic is).
2. Okay, so what is a Psychic?
First of all, there are several different names for a Psychic…I personally prefer to call myself an Intuitive (or Intuitive Consultant), because of some of the negative connotations I’ve unfortunately encountered (and that are often connected) with the word Psychic. It’s just a preference thing for me – there are many times when I think of the word Psychic, I’m immediately drawn to a “Miss Cleo” image – and for those of you who have had readings with me, you know I’m anything but that! Other people who are Psychic will call themselves Clairvoyants, Empaths, or Sensitives too.
Back to what a Psychic is though – a Psychic is someone who uses their intuition to get information on various topics, areas of interest, burning life questions, etc. A Psychic can NOT tune into the deceased, they solely focus on the present and future.
3. So you’re a Medium and a Psychic…you look pretty normal, but can you read my mind?
Yes I am, and I am VERY normal. I’m a mommy to two wonderful children (Ethan is 2 and Celia is 5 months), I have a great husband (who’s an engineer, to boot!), and I do not wear capes, robes, turbans, fake eyelashes, or use a crystal ball. And honestly, I can NOT read minds (nor do I want to) or get lottery numbers from Spirits. Believe me…if I did…well, you use your imagination!
4. Is your husband supportive of what you do?
Absolutely he is – he is probably my biggest fan and source of inspiration. I like to think that I’m starting to rub off on him a bit too, as he’s becoming quite intuitive. My husband and I were high school sweethearts who went to small “rival” high schools in Western New York. Essentially, he has grown up with me exploring, developing, and using these gifts. He doesn’t think twice about what I do, see, feel, hear, or sense and he is probably one of the most grounding influences I have in my life. I’d be lost without him!
5. Do you think that your children will have these gifts, and if they do, will you encourage them to use their abilities?
I joke that Ethan is already my little budding Medium. Even at the age of 2, he sees Spirits and will “talk” or wave to them. All children have the ability to be Psychic or to be a Medium. Children are born with that “divine light” that allows them to see what many teenagers and adults end up closing themselves up to. So when your child talks to their “imaginary friend,” chances are they are actually communicating with a Spirit.
I’m not really sure when most people close off their Psychic or Mediumistic side – and of course, we all have the ability to open it back up again too. With a little confidence and proper training, anyone can tune into Spirit.
So, if Ethan or Celia chooses to hold onto their abilities and let them blossom, my husband and I are happy to encourage them to use their gifts in a respectful and safe manner.
6. Kelly – when did you know you had these abilities?
Well, these abilities run on my Mother’s side of the family, so I suppose that helped a little bit in developing them. The exact moment when I knew something bigger was going on was when I was 8 years old. As all little kids do, I was getting into a little mischief with a type-writer in my Father’s home-office.
Suddenly, I got the feeling as though I was being watched and when I turned around, I saw my Father’s mom (who passed away when I was 3 years old), Olive, looking back me with a somewhat stern look, waving her finger at me. I was so frightened seeing her standing there, that I covered up the type-writer and ran out of my father’s office as fast as I possibly could.
A day or two later, I was with my Mother’s mom, Ceal, and I started to share with her what happen. Instead of her being shocked, she smiled warmly and started to share with me that seeing Olive, was completely normal.
That conversation lead to an amazing relationship beyond just having her as an awesome Grandma…but with Ceal being my very first mentor and teacher. This October will be 2 years since she has passed away – our relationship has shifted a little bit, but she is still and will always be the best teacher and mentor I have ever had.
So…here’s a question for you!
Are you looking for a way to open back up your Intuition or Mediumship?
Consider taking one of my Workshops, Classes, or even attending one of my Message Circles. It’s a fun way to help you to open back up to Spirit and trust those gut instincts we all receive.
